Lucy’s Performing Arts class gave a quick performance yesterday during assembly. She does not like performing in front of people, but she did it! She survived. (It was Decades Day at co-op, which is why some of them are dressed up).

My Chemistry class celebrated Mole Day yesterday. I told them that they could earn extra credit on our next test if they brought in treats that look like moles or that have “mole” in the name. We had mole Twinkies, Ani-mole Crackers, and mole-asses cookies.

This experiment was to show chemical and physical reactions. The toilet bowl cleaner dissolved the egg shell.

This experiment was to show that gas takes up more volume than liquid. We added water to these cans, kept them on the hot plate, and when the water began boiling, we added the lids. When the water inside turned from gas back into liquid, it collapsed the cans.

This experiment was to show that molecules move faster when they are heated. The food coloring mixed much faster in the hot water vs the cold water.

Density experiment.
As you can see, I took some fun pictures for the yearbook. We did have fun with the experiments, but not as much fun as these faces would have you believe. Some weeks the whole class is spent doing math. Our chemistry is math heavy. Balancing chemical equations is a lot of fun. Truly.
We have made it through six modules of chemistry, and so far, I have enjoyed it more than I anticipated. The students (and I) were all very intimidated by Chemistry at first, but have done well with it. So far, I haven’t lost anyone! So far.
